Life update: Applying to go back to university

15th February 2020

On Friday 7th February I visited the University of Leeds for the postgraduate open day. I am applying to study a Masters in Disability Studies, starting in September this year.

I had a really informative day and my decision to pursue my next step in higher education was made straight away after speaking to staff and current students, as well as the talk for the Social Policy MA being far from what I expected.

Why a Masters, and why now?

Since being the final year of my undergraduate degree and graduating in December 2018, I had been deciding between working or studying for a year. I did apply for a few graduate schemes, then realised I wanted to earn my own money for a bit and gain more skills and experience in a workplace environment.

I have decided that being at work for just over a year, I want to experience university as a postgraduate student and gain another qualification to put on my CV. I believe it will also massively help my confidence, and ultimately I feel if I don’t apply now, I never will.

Why Leeds? What drew you to Disability Studies?

I was drawn to the University of Leeds as it’s my home town and will hopefully be less expensive than my undergraduate. I will be living at home, and I’ll try to look for part-time work whilst studying.

I know the city and the campus so I wouldn’t have to spend much time learning routes into town and getting to and from campus since it’s easy to get there around 30 minutes.

I was drawn to the Disability Studies MA because very few universities in the country offer it. I have always had an interest in disability and the theory surrounding it, as well as my own lived experiences. I also want to develop my understanding of more aspects of Disability Studies, and I hope when it comes to applying for jobs later on, it would give me an edge over someone else.

I will hopefully be starting my application soon. I am looking forward to the idea of going back to university and study a subject I am hugely passionate about.

I will be sure to write any further updates – is there anything I should know bout applying for and studying a Masters?
